Certified Duncan Teacher

GOOD NEWS

iadcctlogofullsizereposted from Facebook page.
I found out today that the Duncan Teacher Certification that Jim and I earned way back in the 70s is still valid. Now we are eligible to join IADCCT (International Association of Duncan Ceramic Certified Teachers). Membership will enable us to be more up to date on products and techniques and share that knowledge with you, our students. (Unfortunately, I am pretty sure that the certificate was thrown out a long time ago, never dreaming that we would need it or be able to post it in the studio.)

Ceramic Competition

Jim and I will be attending the Midwest Ceramic Association Show in Dayton for the third year in a row.  It is held on Friday and Saturday the 21st and 22nd of April. We have taken many classes and supported a lot of the vendors. But this year we would like to do something special — enter our students’ pieces in the competition. Competition entries must be submitted on Wednesday so that they can be judged Thursday before the show opens. Therefore, we will not be having Thursday classes that week.

Categories and Sub-Divisions

There are 14 categories (A thru M) with 6 or more sub-divisions within each category. You can see the complete list by going to MidwestCeramics.org. I also have a printed copy in the studio which you can look at. I can help you decide which piece or pieces to enter, which category and subdivision to check,  and how to complete the entry form.  Your piece should be made within the last year. Entry forms have columns for five different entries. Each person completes a separate entry form, so that means you can enter as many as five pieces. (Most entry fees are $1.25 or $1.75 per item.)

Additional pictures of entries, classes, and vendors can be found at MidwestCeramics.org

New Workshop Policies

All workshops must be prepaid.

New Year, New Policies. Most adult workshops are $20, Date Nights are $25 per couple, and Kids Krafts are $10 unless stated otherwise in the ad. If that is a hardship, at least a 50% deposit must be made before we will pour your items. We  have had numerous times when people register and then do not show up. Folks just do not understand the time, effort, and costs associated with preparing the bisque for them to paint and the frustration of no shows.

paypal-logo-20071All workshops can be paid for through PayPal. Simply enter my email address CarolWarneke@sbcglobal.net. You can use your credit card if you do not have a PayPal account. Be sure to state the date of the workshop you are attending, how many people are attending, and  what piece(s)  you are making.

mailbox-clipart-mailbox3If you do not wish to use PayPal you can mail a check or drop one off at the house. Make checks payable to Carol Warneke and mail or deliver to
4494 Woodridge Drive, Austintown, OH 44515. Keep in mind that it takes time for the mail to get here.

Bisque takes a minimum of 3 days for each piece: one to pour, one to clean, one to fire. If several people want the same item we must add another day for each piece. Don’t want until it’s too late you get the piece you want.

Upcoming Workshops

  • Date Night, Saturday, February 4th  from 7:00 to 10:00, featured Mickey & Minnie
  • Bonnie’s Bunch Snowmen, Friday, February 10th from 1:00 to 3:00
  • Kids Krafts Valentine Boxes, Friday, February 10th from 6:00 to 8:00
  • Flirting Owls Valentine Plate I,  Sunday, February 12th from 1:00 to 5:00
  • Flirting Owls Valentine Plate II,  Wednesday, February 15th from 6:00 to 10:00
  • Kids Krafts Marbles on Plate, Friday, February 24th, from 6:00 to 8:00

Open Classes

Every Monday and Thursday evening the studio will be open from 6:00 to 10:00 for you to work on whatever you want. We strive to have items poured within a week after requested and also to have things fired within a week. This is a goal, but life  happens and we are not always successful. You can always check with me before you come to see if your items are ready. Please let me know that you are coming, or if you change your mind that you are not coming. Seating is limited to those who are painting. We do not have room for visitors.

It’s time to paint!

happy-clockNEW YEAR, NEW SCHEDULE, NEW TIMES

Starting with our reopening this week, Open Classes will be held only on Mondays and Thursdays. Due to varied schedules of our students we will open at 6:00 and close at 10:00 until further notice. Come when you can and stay as long as you like. This should enable people who need to leave early to do so and also accommodate those who need to come a little later due to work and family obligations. Please let us know you are planning to attend so that we can set up the tables and work stations ahead of class time. Likewise, let us know if you usually attend and are unable to come. Thanks.
Workshops will be held on selected Sundays and Wednesdays, also from 6:00 to 10:00. And Kids Krafts will be on selected Fridays from 6:00 to 8:00.  Both are scheduled for about every three weeks.

Decorating the Bathroom

The walls aren’t even up yet but we are making progress! And after I help Jim with the construction I get to do the decorating!

I repainted the original Clay Magic Carousel Horse Plaque to match other colors planned for the bathroom (it was previously country blue and mauve, not exactly my colors). Here is the second plaque shown in greenware. There is also a third plaque in the series and I am searching for it online.

Wallpaper border.

Carousel Horse USPS Poster sent to me by a fellow crafter because he knew I collected carousels. If there is room for it, it will go on one of the walls in the bathroom.

Game Room Updates

reposted from today ‘s Facebook page.
WORKING ON THE GAME ROOM TODAY
This may not seem to have anything to do with a ceramic studio, but in fact it does. Finished moving three bookcases from the end wall to the side wall in order to better display finished pieces. The shelves are rather crowded until Jim gets a chance to build additional shelving, but at least we can find a sample when we need it.

This project involved giving away one shelf unit of jigsaw puzzles, one shelf unit of games, and one shelf unit of books. Some of the games went upstairs (the ones we actually play), some went into the game room coffee table for when the kids from Kids Krafts finish early and need something to do. The rest went to family. The books went to the husband of a student who is involved in scouting (he is actually getting puzzles and games as well as books). Some are saved for Jesse, the math books went upstairs for tutoring, and the professional books are going to Vanessa who is setting up a resource room where she works.

The closet also got some attention today — putting away bins of Christmas bisque, bows & party supplies, carousel animals, and outdoor pieces that have been packed up. It will hold 5 stacks of 3 bins so we have a little room left.

I arranged the baseball souvenirs on the one remaining shelf unit in the far corner of the room. Then I hung up baseball pennants and mascots from our travels last year and this year. That includes Atlanta Braves, Miami Marlins, Tampa Bay Rays (2015); Kansas City Royals, Houston Astros, Texas Rangers (2016); and the Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory.

There is still lots to do in the game room. We hope to be able to host showers and parties where kids or adults can play some games after finishing their painting. We are keeping the pool table, dart boards, and popcorn machine along with some party games for this purpose.

The studio has a nice clean look to it now, as well, with clean shelves, a rack for the glazes, new table covers, and so forth. We just need to stock the shelves with our winter bisque — snowmen, penguins, sleds, valentine boxes, and figurines.

Guess I am rambling a bit but it feels good to get something done. Jim went out tonight and bought a tool he needs to work on the bathroom floor. So perhaps we can get some of that project done as well.

WHAT’S HAPPENING?

This article is reposted from today’s Carousel Creations Facebook page.

ADULT WORKSHOPS have been set up for Sunday afternoons and Wednesday evenings starting January 22nd when we will paint the Star Bright Snowman onto a sled. Workshops are every three weeks, with the Wednesday session a repeat of the Sunday session. Adult workshops are $20 which includes the lesson, all supplies, and snacks.

KIDS KRAFTS WORKSHOPS have been set up for every other Friday evening beginning January 27 when we will be making a snowman mug. Kids Krafts workshops are $10 which includes the lesson, all supplies, and snacks.

BONNIE’S BUNCH (a homeschooler group) has a private workshop for Thursday, January 19 where the Kids will be painting snowmen. They also have a MOM’S DAY OUT on Sunday January 29th where they will be making the Chilly Billy snowman. We hope to be able to make cutouts in the greenware so they can light up,

OPEN CLASSES will resume on Mondays and Thursdays from 7:00 to 10:00 beginning Monday January 23rd. The difference between workshops and classes is that workshops have a specific piece and lesson, whereas open classes allow you to work on whatever you want. Open class fees are $5 per session plus the cost of bisque and any extra firings.

UPKEEP — We are housecleaning, rearranging shelves, packing away seasonal bisque, and painting new samples for the winter items. Just finished some unicorns and a Valentine tree — pictures will be posted some day soon.

REMODELING  — In addition to changes in the studio, the Mud Room has been cleared out to make room for the bathroom — the main reason for the shutdown. We probably won’t have everything completed in time for the reopening but hope to at least have the walls up.

POURING for the upcoming workshops will have to start next week. So get your reservations in for the workshops and your orders in for bisque you want for open classes. Remember that we can only pour any given mold once per day; and we need time to pour, clean, and fire each piece.

LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING EVERYONE BACK, PAINTING,
AND HAVING FUN AGAIN IN JUST A COUPLE OF WEEKS!
